Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little.Nella discografia di Ella Fitzgerald occupa uno spazio rilevantissimo la serie dei Songbooks, gli album dedicati interamente all’interpretazione degli standards di un grande autore americano. Il più riuscito è quello in cui lei canta le canzoni di Cole Porter, anche per merito di Cole Porter. Quando fu inciso, Cole Porter era ancora vivo, e lo ascoltò. Lui commentò: «Ehi, questa ragazza ha una dizione perfetta!». "Everytime we say goodbye" è la sua più bella canzone d’amore. A parte le molte versioni jazz, l’hanno cantata i Simply Red e Annie Lennox che, complice un’elegantissimo arrangiamento di pianoforte e fisarmonica, ne fece una versione bellissima (AA.).

Il testo è stupendo, monologo di una storia borderline nata male e finita male, e dell’orgoglio di chiuderla.
